Sustainable Future – Emanuele Naboni
We broadcast a recording of the interview with Dr. Emanuele Naboni. The conversation took place in the context of the course Emerging Fields in Architecture, TU Vienna (WS 2022/23).
Emanuele Naboni is a practitioner, educator, and researcher in the field of Urban Climatic Design and Climatic Architectural Technology, with a strong focus on Regenerative sciences and the application of parametric digital means, onsite data gathering, and 1:1 prototyping. His primary research interests lie in Design for Climate Change, specifically at the urban and facade design scales, with a particular emphasis on generating microclimatic conditions that support regenerative concepts for local ecosystems, decarbonization, and health.
Since 2010, Emanuele has held the position of Associate Professor of Building Technology at the Royal Danish Academy, where he is contributing to the scientific design of the Master of Architecture in Extreme Environments program, which features a collaboration with NASA. This program has led to the design and construction of almost 200 architectural devices around the world. In recognition of his contributions to the field, Emanuele has been appointed as an adjunct professor at UC Berkeley, and the University of Sevilla, starting from 2023.
He has established himself as a leading figure in innovative European Union projects, including those for the Implementation of Circular Economy in the Built Environment. As an associate member of the EU Project NLited (2020-24), he is contributing to New Level of Integrated Techniques for Daylighting Education in Europe.
In addition to his academic and research endeavors, he is also committed to humanitarian work, supporting the development of climatic dwellings in Tanzania and Thailand. His expertise has also recently been sought by the World Health Organization (WHO) to provide support for projects in sensitive areas affected by climate change.
Arianna Patton and Martina Janssen conducted the interview and produced this broadcast as part of the course Emerging Fields in Architecture at the Vienna University of Technology.

Broadcast series focus 2023: Sustainable Future
Architects play a crucial role in shaping our future. Through their concepts and designs, they initiate spatial, social, and technological innovations that can have far-reaching impacts on our coexistence. How we will live in the future is a complex question that engages researchers, creatives, and experts from various disciplines. As part of the „Emerging Fields in Architecture“ module at TU Wien, numerous experts were interviewed on this topic during the winter semester of 2022/2023. Concrete as well as far-reaching proposals were discussed, and multidisciplinary and cross-disciplinary strategies were developed to address current and future design challenges in the context of social change. Architecture has a crucial role to play in addressing global challenges such as climate change and demographic change. Therefore, it is essential that architects have a broad understanding of sustainability, technology, and social issues and incorporate them into their designs. By pursuing an interdisciplinary approach, architects can contribute to shaping a sustainable and future-proof world in which we can all live.
