Medicine: Treatment of outpatients with Covid-19

21.12.2022

It is reasonable to assume that almost everybody knows what Covid-19 is. Nevertheless, here are four reminders: Covid-19 is a very contagious disease. Covid-19 has a much higher mortality rate (death rate) than the flu. About 6,7 million people worldwide have died from Covid-19 until today. Therefore, please do not think that Covid-19 is over. The President of the Austrian Society for Family Medicine has warned recently: Please continue to protect yourself and your family.
The general principles of treatment of outpatients with Covid-19 are: In all non-hospitalized adults with mild to moderate Covid-19, symptom management should be initiated. In all non-hospitalized adults who are at high risk of progression to severe Covid-19, several antiviral therapeutic options have become available since the year 2021 to reduce the risk of hospitalization or death.
New options for the treatment of outpatients with Covid-19 include, for example, the medicinal drug known as “REGEN-COV” (with its official name, casirivimab plus imdevimab), bamlanivimab plus etesevimab, and sotrovimab. All three have been tested in clinical studies and were effective. These three new medicinal drugs lowered the rate of hospitalization or death in outpatients with Covid-19. However, access to these three new medicinal drugs, respectively, to other similar new medicinal drugs, is difficult or even impossible in some areas of the world, including several regions in developed countries.
