Medicine: Do patients who need oxygen need less oxygen?

17.04.2017

Do patients who need oxygen need less oxygen? If someone needs extra oxygen, from a tank, our automatic reaction is: “More is more.” But what if the opposite is true? “Less is more?” Could that be true?
Yes, it seems that patients who need oxygen need less oxygen.
A well-known professor has analysed two new and important clinical studies from 2016, and she admits that these two new clinical studies do not give definitive answers, but she points out that these two new studies raise serious questions about delivering more oxygen than needed.
She concludes that as we learn more and more about the potential harm of too much oxygen, targets of 94% to 98% oxygen saturation may become more common.
