Affirmations for the Future: A Sonic Healing Piece for BIPOC

10.09.2021

„Affirmations for the Future: A Healing Piece for Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (BIPOC) in Vienna” combines sound and collective affirmations to express our emotions as a tool for community healing and support through the journeys and uncertainties of the future.

Pt. I “Wut” (“Anger”) explores the difficulties and necessities of expressing anger of historical and systematic racism in the face of silence. The work takes place in Bandgasse, one of the streets of Vienna’s former diamond district in the 7th district. This small strip of the city connected the city to the colonial diamond complex of Asia, Africa, and the Americas, while also intertwined with the city’s Jewish and post-war immigrant communities. In the last ten years, this neighborhood is a lively hub for the arts, fashion, and city politics yet the histories of marginalized peoples of Bandgasse are invisible from public sight and memory.

Pt. II offers a much needed space of relaxation and rest. The work contains readings of affirmations in German, English, Korean, Arabic, French, and Finnish written and recited from BIPOC current and former residents of Vienna.
