James Moody lebte von 1925 bis 2010 Er war einer der ersten Tenorsaxophonisten, die Bebop spielten, und galt als wichtige „Institution im Jazz“. Sowohl auf dem Tenorsaxophon als auch auf der Querflöte, die er auf Anregung von Yusef Lateef ab dem Ende der 1950er Jahre einsetzte, entwickelte er einen warmen Klang, der die dunklen Register bevorzugte.
