Das Wort „Jazz“ taucht wohl erstmals 1913 auf, als ein Spiel des Baseballteams der San Francisco Seals von einem Zeitungsreporter kritisiert wurde. „Jazz“ wurde hier synonym für schwungvoll oder enthusiastisch verwendet. Der erste musikalische Nachweis für das Wort Jazz findet sich in der Chicago Daily Tribune vom 11. Juli 1915 im Zusammenhang mit einem synkopierten Rag von Art Hickman
