The 1st Antarctic Biennale began in Ushuaia, the southernmost city of our planet. Around 100 participants: artists, scientists, futurists and interdisciplinary partners boarded the Akademik Sergey Vavilov research ship. The ship was understood to be a floating studio, conference and exhibition space. Onboard passen- gers took part in discussions, poetry, and philosophy workshops together as well as developing a vision for the continuing Antarctic Biennale. Each expedition member was asked to observe and take part in a form of art-making. During landings at scientific bases and historic and natural sites in Antarctica artists made temporary, site specific and ecologically compatible installations and performances.

As part of the 1st Antarctic Biennale Barbara Imhof recorded and produced a 12 part series on the project and short video with selected interview statements.
